These buildings had suffered severe damage to the piles and support beams due to corroding reinforcing steel. Old age combined with a very aggressive marine environment caused the corroding steel to spall off much of the cover concrete, further accelerating the damage. Numerous repairs in the past had proven to be ineffective. Edge Structural Composites VelaCarb 335U was chosen for cost, effectiveness and its high resistance to environmental degradation. The spalled concrete was removed (with the aid of gravity in most cases!) and the corroded steel was either replaced or cleaned and protected. The missing concrete was replaced and repaired with carbon fiber sheets.
